A good portrait captures the likeness of a subject, a great portrait captures both an excellent likeness and a sense of the sitter's personality, seamlessly melding the two into a priceless snapshot of a loved one's spirit at the moment they were drawn or painted. It's my goal to only deliver great portraits.
When at all possible, I like to bring my painting and photography equipment to meet with the subject and plan out the portrait with input from them and their loved ones. I'll start the portrait from life and take reference photos to continue working from my studio with regular check ins so the sitter can observe the progress and offer opinions throughout. If meeting up is absolutely impossible, on occasion I can help guide a client through taking their own photos that I can then paint from but I need to stress that this can be very time consuming and does not always produce viable photographs. I will always do my best to make this process as easy and enjoyable as possible.
I wish I could provide a list of generic estimates but unfortunately it is very difficult to determine how many hours of work a piece will require beforehand. Estimates are influenced by the number of figures in a portrait, how much of the subject is shown, the complexity of the clothes or background, size of the piece, and many other factors. I include shipping in all of my estimates as well as complementary archival matting for drawings. Upon request, I am happy to assist in procuring frames at cost and only ask that the client cover the extra shipping.
